Lithuania's Iron Wolves Base Game
Introduction

Staking their claim to Vilnius, or Wilno in Polish, the Polish Army stationed their best unit, the 1st “Legion” Infantry Division, in the contested city. The Polish Legion spearheaded the invasion of Lithuania, rolling forward in what the Polish command believed would be an unstoppable wave. The Lithuanians met them with their own best infantry division, and were fighting on what was indisputably their own soil.

Conclusion

The Lithuanians had spent heavily on defense over the preceding decade, but could do nothing about their small population base and the 1st Legion was easily their best Polish infantry formation. After hours of heavy fighting the Poles broke through the Lithuanian lines and the de-fenders had to pull away before the Polish cavalry joined the pursuit.

Scenario LIWo001

Now for something completely different, a brief write up on the book. This “what if” book played out better than expected, the “what if” Iron Wolves put up a good fight in most if not all of the scenarios and gave as good as they got for a force that is usually outnumbered with limited supporting units. One thing that makes this book stand out is the variety of opponents, besides the Iron Wolves you can play as the German, Polish and Soviet forces, in fact in one scenario the Wolves and Germans team up against the Pols. Overall liked the book, good change of pace from the Deluge, Fire in the Step and Armata Romana.

Now for the scenario: This is a tough fight for the Polish forces, they have three objectives, besides step losses they have to clear the East-West Road and control more town hexes, which the Wolves do not give up so easily. The key for the Polish forces is their OBA, air support and mortar assets, which can make it tough on the Wolves if and when they need to shift their forces. This battle went down to the wire, the Wolves only giving up one objective at the end, more town hexes but they bleed the Polish forces white and did not give up the road.
