Introduction

In the British Army’s first combat action of the Korean War, Capt. Neil A. Buchanan of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders led a company-sized force out to force back a group of North Koreans trying to infiltrate between the British brigade and the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division. Some ROK National Police accompanied the Brits on their mission.

Conclusion

Buchanan and his batman were badly wounded, and the captain ordered his men to leave him behind. That was the last anyone saw of the gallant captain and his servant. Other British probes eventually forced the North Koreans out of the gap

Korean War: Counter-Attack, scenario #39: First Combat

I had time tonight, to get another small scenario in and picked this one because it looked interesting to get British and ROK National Police against North Korean units from the 10th Division who were filtering in between the British 27th Infantry Brigade’s and the US 2nd Infantry Division’s lines. To win, the British with the help of the South Korean Police units have to clear the east-west road, free of undemoralized NKPA units by the end of the scenario.

The North Koreans setup pretty much along the east-west road dug-in, with one SMG units in the adjacent woods as backup. The NKPA is a smaller forces but can use the terrain and dug-in to their advantage. The British and ROK forces enter from the east and push forward until hitting the NKPA lines. With only 14 turns and no air or artillery support, the British and ROK forces have to attack right away and it is the British first actual combat experience in the Korean War. Both sides exchange fire and the fighting goes back and forth until almost the last turn, when the British finally clear the road but a dice roll either way or this would have gone the other way. A very close match and this scenario could also be a very nice introduction scenario. The British won this one, on the last turn, so a very close match.
