Korean War: Counter-Attack, scenario #14: A Little Help
First let me state that the Americans had a large shortage on VT Fuze ammo in 1950 but still had large stock piles of the standard artillery shells left over from WWII. But when available the VT Fuze artillery shells/ammo was devastating to opposing enemy forces. Counter-Attack has 3 or 4 scenarios where it is available and used. I noticed in the U.S. Military history books, they mentions especially when it was used in the Korean War engagements, so I was careful to only use this rules when I knew for certain of its use. Sometimes in the beginning of the Korean War, there was a lack of supply of both types of artillery shells but the standard was more ready available by far.
This scenario looked pretty straight forward, to push the North Koreans off the northern hill mass and villages below and the NKPA are already in a reduced state but maybe they can hold on to one or more hill masses to squeak out a victory. The Americans attack with a healthy Army’s 9th Regiment and 78 points of off-board VT Fuze Artillery points. I thought 18 turns might not be enough but the American Infantry and the VT Fuze Artillery destroyed the dug-in North Koreans Infantry. The Americans eliminated 12 steps of North Korean steps, 2 Leaders and 1 Kommissar officer who deserted himself and controlled all the hill mass on HIll 0508 as well as all the villages for the loss of only 1 steps of Infantry. It was a text book assault and an easy American Victory. With that said, I still really enjoyed having and using that kind of fire-power the large amount of VT Artillery I had in this scenario. It was kind of like taking all my frustration out for hundreds of difficult PG assaults over the years and just blowing the defenders away for a change, it was very gratifying!
