Introduction |

The failure of the attacks west of the Matanikau on the 21st and 22nd led General Sebree to alert the 8th Marine Regiment to pass through the 164th Infantry and assault on the 23rd. Again the attack would be preceded by a long bombardment of Japanese positions. |
Conclusion |
---|
Once again, the attack again went nowhere. General Sebree concluded that the positions could not be taken without undue casualties. The impending departure of the worn-out 1st Marine Division would so reduce American strength that a resumption of the offensive would have to wait until January 1943. |

After having played scenarios lasting dozens of turns on the small islands, 15 turns on the big map fly by! And that is the problem. US was lucky with the initial big bombardments, but the Japanese have enough forces to tie down the Americans and hold out for 15 turns. Better die rolls on turn 14 could have turned the tide for the Americans, but no such luck. I will be replaying this one asap. |

This is yet another in these series of scenarios that are fairly identical, so general notes that apply to all of them aside.... This one has more limited objectives and a fresh regiment of marines on the line. In theory this should make it easier for the Americans as they dont have to push through multiple points on the line. However, the US army units are frozen in place unless the Japanese assault them, which they wont. This means that the Japanese can completely displace their middle and northern sectors and move them south to just sit tight on the objective zone. Its simply too many bodies to get through in the time limit. They also only need 6 step losses this time around, and its even easier to get 6 than 8, so the Americans are basically playing for a draw anyway. IF the Americans are able to push through the entrenched Japanese line AND the counterassaulting INF stacks, then they still have to cut through all the other Japanese that walk south. It just isnt going to happen. Pregame OBA softens up the entrenchments a bit, getting 2 step losses and a couple of disruption. HMG exchanges and OBA get a few more disruptions, but the Japanese recover almost immediately. The Marines cautiously advance along the Southern boardedge/ridgeline and the Japanese move up to get into assault position. The rest of the game is American fire to disrupt the assault line, while the Japanese recover and hit some of the marines with whatever is handy, while they filter more men into the zone. They get their kill counts as eventually assaults will take place. Game ends in another disappointing Japanese win. |
