Introduction

On the 11th, the drive to Kokumbona resumed. The fresh 8th Marine Regiment's 3rd battalion had been committed at the end of the previous day and now the drive would continue. At last the village that served as the Japanese Army's command centre on Guadalcanal was seriously threatened. After an American raid early in the campaign, the Japanese now held the village strongly and would not give it up as easily as the Americans had hoped. Unknown to the Americans, a Japanese force was gathering on their southern flank.

Conclusion

The advance continued but only at a slightly faster pace than the day before. As the Japanese prepared to spring their trap, the Americans suddenly withdrew beyond the Matanikau. Intelligence regarding a massive Japanese reinforcement convoy caused Vandegrift to order the return of the Kokumbona force to the perimeter, while the Japanese wondered what had given away their flanking force's position.

Additional Notes

For a full compliment of Japanese 'Army' pieces. 2 x Guadalcanal sets are required
