Introduction |
---|
Before sunrise on the 28th, the Soviets began an all out attack on Jagodny. They committed fresh troops, attacking at the same time from the north and east. Witnesses said it was an impressive spectacle, with Jagodny illuminated by gunfire from all around. The attacks from the north were repulsed, thanks in part to the spirited action of the flamethrower company. But the Soviets made progress in the eastern sector, eventually decimating the XXV Bersaglieri Battalion defending hill 187.9. The hill, overlooking both Jagodny and many Italian artillery groups, was going to be taken. |
Conclusion |
---|
The only available reserve was the elite Monte Cervino battalion. When the news came that the last defenders of Hill 187.9 were on the verge of retreat, the commander, Colonel Adda, was asked to take that position back with his men. The alpine troops rushed forward and , shouting their battle cry "Pista!" ("Out of our way!!!"), relieved the few remaining Bersaglieri and stormed the hill. Eventually, the Soviets were repulsed all along the defensive line. No more serious attempts were made to take Jagodny. The Soviets were worn down, very much like the Italian defenders, but fresh Italian troops had arrived: the 6th Regiment of the 2nd "Tridentina" Alpine Division and a light tank battalion. |

It is too bad that this can't be ranked about an 8 or 9. If you get the room to set up a six map scenario you cannot go wrong with this one. Three separate large Soviet groups are attacking an Italian position with very few reserves. It will be impossible for the Italians to stop every thrust. In my play the Soviets in the north were able to get onto the hill and were trading assaults with the defenders but would ultimately take enough of the hill to keep from losing the scenario. The primary reason for that was that the largest Soviet unit, which attacks in the center of the Italian line was able to break through to the woods behind the line but was then held in place by the Monte Cervino battallion and ultimately crushed. This did, however, take time, which could not then be used to chase the Soviets off the northern spur. In the southeast, the Soviets were able to filter through the Italian line but were halted short of Jagodny by the headquarters troops in the town and heavy artillery concentrations. Make the room necessary to play this scenario, they don't get any better than this. BTW there are no AFVs at all |
