Introduction

The Monte Cervino Battalion's first action was a diversionary assault, designed to draw Soviet attention and (hopefully) resources away from the Izyum area. Advancing under cover of darkness in -32 degree Celsius temperatures, the frozen battalion hit several enemy positions with aid from support weapon companies "borrowed" from the Pasubio Division.

Conclusion

The Battalion went forward, but their attack faltered due to insufficient fire support against the well-prepared Soviet positions. Extreme cold also took its toll - the number of frozen Alpini greatly exceeded combat casualties. The attack was soon called off and the Alpini had to fight their way back.
