Introduction

After the fall of the Dnieper line, the Soviets entrenched in anew position in the hopes of stopping the Axis advance to the town of Stalino. The main town held by Soviet forces was Pavlograd, but maintained a well-manned bridgehead in front of the town on the west side of the river Voltschia. The task of eliminating the bridgehead and capturing Pavlograd was given to the German 198th Infantry Division, with left-flank support from Colonna Garelli. The latter was an Italian battle group that included elements of the Tagliamento Legion and an attached corps-level artillery group. Their attack started on October 10th, with the initial Italian objective being the village of Mizirite.

Conclusion

The village of Mavrina was quite heavily defended and protected by a deep anti-tank ditch and barbed wire. Despite the unfavorable conditions, an Italian assault captured the village by noon. During the final hours of the 10th the Italians managed to capture the next village beyond Mavrina. The assault on the Pavlograd bridge took place on the 11th, and unlike the road bridge, located a few kilometers southwards, this one fell to the Legionnaires intact.
