Introduction |
---|
The Austrian 6th Cavalry Division made the first foray over the border into Russian Poland, advancing ahead of Fourth Army to screen its deployment and find the Russians. Just on the Austrian side of the frontier it ran hard into the Russian cavalry screen, and its commander FML Oskar Wittman called up his attached infantry, two battalions from Vienna's famed Deutschmeister regiment and a Feldjäger battalion, all from the 25th Infantry Division. The Deutschmeister's commander, Col Ludwig Holzhausen, and his entire staff led the regiment into the war's first battle. |
Conclusion |
---|
Holzhausen drew his sword and led his men forward at a walk, to be struck down by Russian bullets as soon as he came into range. The Cossacks had prepared their own field fortifications, though their supporting regular infantry had not, and they held off repeated attacks by the Imperial and Royal Army's best infantry regiment. The Deutschmeister suffered 39 killed, including Holzhausen, and 51 wounded. Unimpressed by dismounted combat, even in victory, the Stavka fired 1st Don Cossack Division's commander, Lt. Gen. Alexei Kuzmin-Korovaev, that evening. |

This is a clever and quick play scenario that I enjoyed very much. The Russians set up the cavalry screen just south of the road, weighting their right (west) flank to screen the guns and infantry that set up in the woods to the north. They detached a battalion Cossacks to guard the road on their left (east) flank. The idea was to make the AH infantry advance under fire from the guns without engaging the dismounted cavalry. This didn't work. The Austrian-Hungarians came out quickly with the Jaegers on the west flank and the bulk of the infantry in the center with a battalion of infantry to deal with the enemy blocking the road. The Russian field gun fire was ineffective, and the AH infantry slammed into the Cossack line which made the mistake of trying to hold. They were overrun and their commander killed at 115 hours. The Russians decided to give up the road VC and withdraw before their initiative dropped to 1. But it was too late as retreating Cossacks wee overrun and soon an AH minor victory was in handgun. The AH troops pressed on as the Russians limbered their guns and try t run away. The infantry was pinned in the woods as the AH tried to get the guns. One gun was run down by Jaegers but the Cossacks, who came around the woods was able to protect one gun on the last turn and prevent an AH Major Victory. |
