Introduction |
---|
For 225 days, the 4th Mountain Division fought to hold the Soviets around the Black Sea port of Novorossisk. Finally, the Soviet 18th Army launched a bold offensive to break the deadlock. While one pincer attacked from the north, a landing force headed straight for the heart of Novorossisk’s harbor. But the advance from the south out of a small beachhead held since February threatened the division with encirclement, and this had to be stopped if the division were to survive. |
Conclusion |
---|
The Guards’ attack almost broke through the hastily-arranged German defense, but the jägers managed to stem the tide just in time. The 4th Mountain Division withdrew from Novorossisk, an action made famous in Willi Heinrich’s novel Cross of Iron. |
Additional Notes |

If German Gebirg leaders are preferred to regular Heer leaders, they may be gotten from Avalanche Press. |

The goal is to break out as many of the Soviet forces as possible. The Germans were quick to react, pushing to their right quickly and effectively. The drove for the northeast corner and the Germans broke cover to engage them. The Soviet arty failed to stop the Germans from making contact and the Soviet attack bogged down. The Soviets managed to exit 4 steps, but the rest were chewed up by german arty, mortars and assaults. The open ground in the northeast became a killing ground for both sides. Draw. |

This is another race of the map scenario that just doesn't work as written. The Soviet player can simply enter the board as far to the west as permitted in the scenario instructions and run off the board. The Germans can run towards them, and shoot off some OBA at the moving Soviets, but will not be able to interdict them. Of course, the Soviets, with even greater OBA than the Germans are more likely to disrupt their movement than vice versa. And thats exactly what happened in my play. |
