Introduction |
---|
Airship reconnaissance had confirmed the reports of Papuan scouts: a large Australian force approached across the rugged Bismarck Mountains toward the gold-mining center of Wau. Rushed by truck along well-paved roads to Wau, the Marines arrived on their own side of the border well ahead of the foot-slogging Aussies. When the Australians crossed into German territory, the Marines would be ready to greet them. |
Conclusion |
---|
The inexperienced Australian Militia stumbled into repeated German ambushes, as the Marines used their knowledge of the New Guinea jungle to conceal themselves and their discipline to quietly await the attackers. After several hours of unsuccessful attacks, the Australians withdrew to await reinforcements and try again. And they most assuredly would try again. |
