Introduction |
---|
The D-Day drop left the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment scattered across a larger area than anticipated. Long before dawn, the 150 men of HQ Company, 3rd Battalion landed fully fifteen miles north of their landing zone. When false dawn arrived, they began working their way out of the swamps south of Carentan to a church located on a nearby hilltop in Graignes. Recon patrols found no Germans between themselves and Carentan, four and a half miles away. Knowing his mission was to link up with the rest of 3rd Battalion Captain Leroy D. “Dave” Brummitt had planned to led his troops northward that night until they reached the rest of their unit. When Major Charles D. Johnston arrived and took command, he decided to defend Graignes. The paratroopers were assigned positions and waited for events to unfold. Throughout Saturday June 10th small German probes were easily driven off. The next morning was quiet until gunfire promptly ended Mass for the paratroopers in attendance. That attack was again quickly driven off but the Germans would be back. |
Conclusion |
---|
At the time of the Allied invasion, 17th SS Panzer Grenadier had been located far from Normandy and while their lead elements had arrived most of their artillery was still far to the rear. When the militia entered combat at 1400 hours it appears that only two artillery pieces were available to support them. It was not enough; although the American paratroopers were hard-pressed for a spell this effort was also repulsed. At 1900 the two guns opened up again and this time one of the rounds destroyed the observation post in the church's belfry hampering the American mortars’ effectiveness. This emboldened the SS men to close with the defenders as darkness fell. It was soon all over but a hundred or more paratroopers slipped away to the south to fight another day. Once the SS had the town, they murdered both the parish priest and the two elderly women who took care of the rectory as well as 41 other civilians. All of the wounded American paratroopers including medical personnel at the aid station in the church were murdered in addition to three officers pulled from the rubble of the Boys School, who were tortured for several hours before finally being put to death. |

There is a redundancy in the victory point awards. Ignore the victory awards point for hexes 0803 and 0804. Counters from Black SS may be used in place of those for Dishonor Before Death. |

A Hard Day’s Fight |

This scenario is simple: The SS need to capture the two hex town, Graignes. The US 82nd Airborne Division set up in the town, following instructions that state that the paratroopers may set up within two hexes of the town. The German 17th SS Panzergrenadier Divsion easily surrounded the town on three sides, after setting up to the east of the Americans. Strengths of the two sides are disportioncate. The 82nd troops only have two full strength platoons, four reduced platoons, a mortar and two HMG’s. The Germans have nine full strength SS grenadiers (7-3 strength), three mortars, two HMG and an engineer. But the Americans possess a significant advantage. They have vastly superior morale at 8-8. The SS are rated at 7-6. But the ensuing battle for the town proved the Germans worthy opponents. The low morale and bad leadership of the SS did not hinder their attack on the town. The German mortars opened up with a 24 point barrage on the 82nd. But to no effect; and the mortars continued to miss their targets throughout the game. The SS troops attacked US positions in assaults and quickly pinned the paratroopers in the town. These assaults were bloody. By turn five, the Germans had eliminated nine paratrooper steps; the US eliminated five German steps. In one assault, snakeyes were rolled by both sides in the initial roll on the Assault Table! (They were not rolled back-to-back.) This resulted in both sides losing 2 stelps. And as the battle continued for the town, the 82nd shifted the VP total in their favor though they lost both hexes of the town at one point. On the last turn (15), the paratroopers only had one full platoon remaining. All other units were eliminated. With this one platoon, they assaulted a German stack of grenadiers in the town. Thus, the hex became contested. No longer controlled by the Ss, the Germans lost two points. The final VP tally : 17th SS - 13; 82nd Airborne- 13 ! A true draw! , |
