Introduction

During preparations for his impending offensive, General Graziani ordered his ally Sultan Olol Dinle to conduct a daring reconnaissance-in-force into the Uebi Scebeli area. The Italians reinforced Dinle with a machine gun platoon and a handful of Italian officers and NCOs (to coordinate radio and air support). Dinle’s 1,000 troops carried out political influence operations among clans and ethnic groups of the area, in addition to a number of scattered guerrilla operations. After several weeks of harassing actions, Dinle settled his troops into an old fort in Gabbà, about 350 km inside enemy territory. He had collected sufficient information about his opponent Degiac Beienè Merid and his imminent counterattack plans that he felt confident holding his position. Graziani had granted Dinle leeway to stand or retreat at his discretion. About 300 of Dinle’s men deserted rather than fight, but they were of low caste and he remained confident with his Sciaveli noblemen along with the promised Italian air support.

Conclusion

Olol Dinle’s tough Somali horsemen fought with exceptionally high morale, knowing that a slow, painful death faced any captured man, and repelled all the Ethiopian attacks during the night and the following day. On the morning of 26th, the daring Sultan and his men received aerial resupply from Italian aircraft dropping parachuted material with great precision into the fort. Meanwhile, other aircraft bombed and strafed the Ethiopians without mercy, disrupting their force. Eventually Degiac Beienè Merid, himself wounded, withdrew his forces with heavy losses. Olol Dinle’s depleted army marched toward the Italian lines having accomplished his mission of securing the Uebi Scebeli valley and weakening the left flank of Ras Destà deployment.

Additional Notes

Eliminating the Italian MGEN factors into victory conditions, but assassination is not a "Battle Type" in PG-HQ!

Scenario COOE013

A large Italian colonial force holed up in fortifications surrounded by an even larger Ethiopian force is the theme for this scenario. Basically if the Ethiopians take the fort or/and kill Olol Dinle they win, simple VC, in many ways a simple game with little manoeuvre. The Ethiopians quickly surround the fort and begin a series of assaults on the outer perimeter of dug outs which are cleared before dawn breaks, however the inner circle of entrenchments are a tougher nut and the attack stalls. With day arriving the ominous drone of Italian aircraft are heard and the Ethiopian troops melt back into the bush leaving 250 dead surrounding the fort. Olol Dinle's little army lost 180 men and march back triumphantly to the Italian lines.Played on a single board with a high counter density this scenario soon comes down to assault after assault and in fact becomes slightly tedious after a while. Added to this that all the action is centred on the town hexes in the centre of boarding there is a lot of stack fiddling going on which to is tedious even with my long fingers. Not a scenario I intend to reprise.

Conquest of Ethiopia, scenario # 13: Graziani’s War: Olol Dinle Strikes Again

I love this game and the unique subject and cool maps and all the scenarios I have played so far, I have enjoy but this one didn’t hit the mark. The Ethiopians attack six fortified entrenchments, all linked and surrounded by dug-in units to boot, not to mention it starts at night with lot of woods terrain. Not much maneuver, as the southern side of the map, the river can only be crossed at two bridges but one is right in front of an Italian entrenchment.

The Italian Colonial troops take some losses on the perimeter but blunt all Ethiopian attempts to take control of any entrenchments or kill the Italian General Olol Dinle. A major Italian Victory. The first scenario I didn’t enjoy that much, from a game that has some good ones. Maybe because the Ethiopians rolled so poorly on most of their assault attempts and the majority of the battle was assaults with weak units.
