Introduction |
---|
Konev believed that the April assault had failed in large part because the Axis had been able to shift resources from nearby parts of the front to counter-attack. To support the main effort centered once again in front of Târgu Frumos, this time the Soviets launched diversionary attacks on both flanks. Around Jassy the 27th Army's 33rd Rifle Corps sent three of their four divisions forward shortly after dawn. Konev and his staff intended these attacks to draw off any reinforcements that might help the Axis defend Târgu Frumos. |
Conclusion |
---|
The 27th Army reported that "The 33rd Rifle Corps . . . had no success after encountering heavy resistance and was fighting along its previous line at day's end." The three divisions combined reported 15 Romanian prisoners taken against 24 killed and 113 wounded. Needless to say, the attack accomplished none of its meager goals. |
