Introduction |
---|
German troops had replaced Romanian formations along much of the front, but northwest of Jassy the Romanian IV Corps remained in place. The key crossroads town of Botoshany dominated the local road network, including the crucial main road leading to Târgu Frumos. Second Ukrainian Front ordered 40th Army to take Botoshany on the offensive's first day. |
Conclusion |
---|
The Romanian infantry put up a fight for Botoshany, the first large town with an ethnically Romanian population to come under Soviet attack in the 1944 offensives. The Soviets had prepared well, and soon levered the defenders out of their positions. The Romanians retreated in reasonably good order, but the Soviets came right behind them. |

The Romanians put their initial defensive line just South of the Trail on map 102, and it held for most of the game. Once it was defeated, however, the secondary line, right around the junction of maps 102 and 103, didn't hold up for long except for the Western woods (near the junction) which held 5 Romanian units (and would NOT go away). In the Eastern portion of the secondary line, however, a breakthrough was achieved, and the town was easily taken, giving the victory to the Russians. (By but a small margin!) |
