Introduction |
---|
Maj. Gen. Theodor Gabriel’s 2nd Mountain Brigade had five battalions detached from various infantry regiments and trained in mountain warfare, and a mission to protect the Bosnian border from Montenegrin raiders. When the Montenegrins emplaced themselves on Kozara Ridge, Gabriel set out from his garrison at Gorazde to kick them back off the high ground. |
Conclusion |
---|
After ejecting the Montenegrins from the ridge, the Austro-Hungarian XVI Corps ordered Gabriel’s brigade to halt there. The brigades would be re-shuffled for a more intensive effort to seal off the Montenegrin border and avoid the embarrassment of losing any towns or cities to the pesky invaders. But the real effort would take place to the north-east against the Serbs. |
Rolling Up the Flanks | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
The Montenegran force set up in a line facing West so that the center was on the western side of the 40 meter hill with the rest extending North and south, the ends Benson back to the east, refusing the flank sort of thing. The Austro-Hungarians entered with the field guns setting up on the western road hex where it could shoot at any exposed enemy forces, while a small force of 3 companies and an MG went to the south end and the rest to the north end. Over the course of the game, I had 2 instances of a turn ending early to dig of war. Five ran lukewarm all game, but slightly in favor of the Austrians as the Montenegrans lost 19 steps of infantry, both MGs and 4 leaders, including their senior officer, while the Austrians lost 1 infantry step and a wagon. The hilltop was cleared, but in the end 1 disrupted Montenegro infantry unit and a leader sat astride the creek, preventing a major victory. Great game right to the end. |
