Introduction |
---|
The northernmost of the U.S. 28th Division's regiments, the 112th, held six miles of meandering riverbank. The center of the regiment's front, held by its 3rd Battalion standing east of the Our River, was hit early on the morning of 16 December by a regiment of the 352nd Volksgrenadier Division. |
Conclusion |
---|
A heavy, but mostly undirected barrage hit the American lines prior to daybreak. The German attack drove a platoon of Company L from its positions around Sevenig. Despite the gap in the center of the regiment and German infantry infiltrating through the thin American line, a steadfast defense of Sevenig (Board 10) by Company L and Ouren (Board 12) and a strong counterattack by two companies of the 2nd Battalion managed to largely restore the American lines by the end of the day. |

The scenario is really quite balanced except for the problem that the 112th must start in location that trap it from making any winning strategy. I contemplated pulling back to the Our River, but this would have given the Germans half of the victory conditions. The scenario was cut short at 0745 because I knocked the pieces around. But the Germans had already put some nails in place. Their strategy was to drive around the flanks of the Severen defense to the right and left flanks. There was no sighting for the first 6-7 turns. The Germans skillfully moved through and behind mthe forests to right and left of Srevern . By 0715, the Germans were in position to attack the American positions from behind. However, the 112th stood firm and disrupted the German attack on the right w pinpoint 155mm barrages. The reserve force from Ouren was committed in desperation to form a line on the bluff before the Our River. Both forces scored one step losses of Infantry. But I would give the German the victory based on their superior position. |
