Introduction |
---|
On D-Day, the 3rd Battalion of the 507th Parachute Infantry found itself badly scattered a long way from their target. Maj. Charles Johnson decided to hole up in Graignes and gather the battalion together. Eventually 180 paratroopers made their way into town along with a glider pilot. While the majority of the men were attending mass on the 10th an SS soldier was shot while scouting the village. The men quickly left mass to prepare for battle but the rest of the day passed quietly. However, the next morning a large enemy force was observed heading in their direction. |
Conclusion |
---|
Security for a German repair party attempting to fix a nearby bridge (destroyed by US paratroopers) required that the SS division take Graignes. In their first action of the war earlier in the day the Götz von Berlichingen SS Division had been bloodily repulsed. After regrouping they launched a second attack which the Americans barely turned back. They regrouped a second time, and their determination paid off as they quickly drove the paratroopers from the town and into the swamps. After securing the town the SS promptly murdered the American wounded, medical staff, two priests, and two French women. For three days two Spaniards and a local townsman led the 87 Americans who had fled into the swamps back to friendly lines. During this time the officers fed everyone by purchasing food from local civilians using the French francs in their escape kits. |

This scenario looked like a short battle between SS and US Airborne troops, no armor, no really special rules, so thought it would be a pretty good fight. Wow, between dice rolls and some pretty fragile SS troops, it surprised me right to the end. I set up the US Major and 2 platoons holding the town just south of the river, and spaced out leaders with the rest of the force far enough forward that the SS had to start out fairly slow or risk a lot of op fire. German arty demoralized one stack but then friendly fire disrupted the adjacent German stack that was looking forward to assaulting that US target next turn. 15 turns going back and forth, demoralized SS and Paras fleeing for a turn or two before regaining their composure and rejoining the fight. German arty falling closer to friendlies than to enemy several times. On the make-it-or-break-it turn 15, the US got the initiative and assaulted an SS force that had hoped to get the initiative. US had enough force standing in the town to take down 2 steps, settling for the half step of infantry and a Hauptsturmfurher, disrupting another leader and platoon. Fighting had skirted past the town in the center as an Airborned PMG moved just ahead of SS to hold the other objective town while an Airborne CPT and demoralized platoon had fled toward them, running interference and in the end sacrificing themselves to halt the SS before they could assault that town on the river. Great game. |
