Introduction |
---|
D-Day objectives for paratroopers of the 2nd Battalion, 501st Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division included destruction of the road and railroad bridges across the Douve River north of Carentan. Following an extremely disorganized landing, only a small number of men could be collected. The battalion commander, Lt. Col. Robert Ballard, believed the number sufficient to capture and hold the bridges long enough to destroy them. Heading southwest from the rally point, Ballard planned to turn south at St. Come-du-Mont. The troopers spotted Germans in the town and the colonel decided to clear them out before proceeding. |
Conclusion |
---|
Ballard's battalion scattered badly during its drop. Prepared for just such an eventuality, he had prepared two different methods to rally his troops: a green electric lantern, and a large bell. But the troopers carrying them were both lost in the jump along with all the radios but one, and only about 125 men could be gathered. Unable to contact his regimental or divisional headquarters, Ballard pushed on anyway. With none of his rifle company commanders having been found he formed his companies and sent two of them against St. Come-du-Mont with the third in reserve. After several unsuccessful attempts to take the town, Ballard finally heard from regimental headquarters, which ordered him to disengage and turn south. The Americans withdrew and the battle ended. |

Stumbling in the Dawn |
---|
the Germans set up with a heavy force in the Town on the hill and lightly defended the Town in 0701. The US bypassed the town using as much of the slopes to avoid fire and approached the town in 0701. The German mortar was very perky early on and causes some delays to the attack on the town. The US set up a multi-hex position around the town and took some effective fire from the defenders that caused additional delays to the assault. Eventually the US was able to get into the town but, the engineer unit was left behind as it was trying to recover its morale which was more difficult than anticipated as I had it stacked with the LtC. By about turn 10 the US had generated all the combat power it could muster in the hex but it was not enough to clear the town. The Germans fought well and most of the US assaults had little or no effect. By game's end two US rifle platoons had been reduced and the Germans still had a full-strength rifle platoon in the town. The US had the time to clear the town it's just that their assaults were not up to the task |

This one is as bad as the second one. Not enough units and it all depends on a lucky roll of the dice. In this case the Americans lost out. Went through the back half of the game with no way to win for the Americans. |
