Introduction |
---|
As part of the III Corps' surprise attack, the 5th Infantry Division's 9th Dorobanti (Rifle) Regiment went forward with fixed bayonets and no artillery preparation, hoping to catch the Soviets by surprise. They succeeded. |
Conclusion |
---|
Neither side proved willing to back down, and a furious hand-to-hand fight raged around the hilltop. By morning neither side could claim the hill, and close-quarter fighting erupted again when darkness fell and carried on into the next day. |

Tough scenario for the Romania’s who are assaulting an entrenched Russian position with no artillery support, their only saving grace is that night rules are in effect for the first couple of turns which allowed them to close on the Russian positions unmolested, since the Russians had 4 HMG platoons and artillery support. The Romanians managed to turn the right flank of the Russian line with heavy fighting that saw a good third of the AR forces demoralized and running away to safety. Those AR units that were left took a beating but one reduced platoon did managed to make it to the objective (by sheer luck) only to be slaughtered the next turn by two very strong Russian stacks, 20 DF points per hex and a leader with a combat modifier. In the end the Armata Romana struggled all game with their 7/6 morale, drawing & flipping some poor leaders did not help, in the end the Russian position was just too strong, they held the high ground with enough good ordered, well lead stacks that the spent AR could not dislodge. |
