Introduction |
---|
Stung by Italian braggadocio following the capture of Moyale, East African Command became determined to take it back. Second East African Brigade sent additional battalions forward to reclaim the lost border post, but they ran into enemy resistance before they reached Moyale; finding the Italians awaiting them at Debele. |
Conclusion |
---|
The British attack failed miserably, as the three entrenched companies of colonial infantry repelled repeated attacks with heavy losses. The King’s African Rifles and Nigerian Regiment troops broke into the Italian positions, but the Italians – mostly Ethiopians – drove them back out at bayonet point and captured the 6th KAR’s battle flag. The British official historian of the campaign, I.S.O. Playfair, makes no mention of this battle. Five days later, the British occupied Debele without a fight, as the Italians had already withdrawn. |

The victory conditions talk about town hexes on Board 88. There are no town hexes on this board, only villages and presumably those are the hexes to which the victory conditions apply. (J6A

Two British infantry have their full strengths printed on the back. They should both be "2-3" when reduced. (Shad

Italians Fought HARD |

**This was a scenario played over six months ago. I’m winging writing about the scenario but I remember the basics. It was an interesting game. The Brits had a tough go of it, but not as bad as what happened in the real battle. In 1940 they were caught flatfooted their attack was defeated by a much weaker opponent. The 2nd King’s African Rifles had over twice the troops and firepower as the Italian 25th Colonial Brigade. The attack looked straightforward, Just punch straight ahead, overwhelming the Colonial Brigade. But the Brigade moved out of Moyale quickly and occupied the high ground overlooking the British advance. They were able to disrupt and demoralize the 2nd KAR for many turns, slowing their advance. But eventually they were overwhelmed and Moyale was in British hhands again. |

After the Italians set up a defense of the town and the road behind it, the British flanked the position around the North and set a spoiling attack in the South to prevent reinforcements from coming to the rescue of the town. In fact, not only were the reinforcements prevented from heading North, they were cut off completely! In short, the battle went better than expected and the British prevailed easily. |
