Introduction |
---|
To support their main effort in front of Targu Frumos, the Soviets launched diversionary attacks on both flanks. Around Iasi the 33rd Rifle Corps sent three of their four divisions forward shortly after dawn. The idea was to draw off any reinforcements that might help the Axis defend Targu Frumos. |
Conclusion |
---|
The 27th Army reported "The 33rd Rifle Corps...had no success after encountering heavy resistance and was fighting along its previous line at day's end." The three divisions combined reported 15 Romanian prisoners taken against 24 killed and 113 wounded. Needless to say the attack accomplished none of its meager goals. |

There were no Romanian wagons in the PG universe when this game was released. Players may either substitute German wagons or download the the DIY counters for Romanian transport from Avalanche Press. |

This is an armor free battle. The Romanians are stretched thin across the front. The Soviets take their mass of infantry (just under 2 regiments) attacking less than 3 battalions of Romanians. The Soviets advancein two masses across map 25, pushing the much smaller Romanian forces out of the way, bypassing some. The Romanians try to stand across the road on map 25, pulling units from maps 9 and 10, but the Soviet masses run past like water around a pebble. The result was a foregone conclusion and the Soviets win easily. |

Too easy for the Soviet sledgehammer | ||||||||||||

This 4 map scenario has an under strength Romanian division holding a wide frontage against far superior Soviet numbers. This is an infantry battle not an AFV in sight, though both side have on board and off board artillery. The VC are slightly unusual in that losses are hardly considered, the Soviet player should try and not lose 20 steps as that will give a minor victory to the axis, other VC concern Soviet exiting steps getting units onto the east-west roads. The Romanian set up was two lines of defence centred around the town on board 10/22 with a Cav reserve in the centre, the plan was to fall back slowly avoiding assaults and hoping to cause casualties. The Red Army commander had a better plan, dividing his force into 4 groups each led by a senior officer, the two flanking forces consisting of nine INF platoons supported by A/T guns were to avoid combat and head for the south, the two other forces were assigned to hold the Romanian defenders in place ensuring that the exiting units would not be harried by Romanian troops. This plan worked well, the leading Axis troops were overrun by Soviet assault units which meant that by GT15 already 20 steps had been exited for the loss of only approx. 150 meanwhile inflicting more than 300 on their Romanian foes. The Romanian CAV reserve did launch a cavalry charge which was the highlight of the battle for the Axis although it still resulted eventually in the destruction of those brave hussars, they did delay the Soviet major victory by a couple of turns. Just a little to unbalanced for my liking not a bad scenario though for a solo play, I think the Romanian player would need a large dose of luck to win this one. |
