Introduction |
---|
Open fighting between Finnish and German troops ended in November 1944, but the Germans still occupied a tiny sliver of Finland in the country's north-western "arm" at Kilpisjarvi. With Germany's final defeat imminent, Finland declared war on Germany on 4 March 1945 - the Allies had declared this a pre-requisite for United Nations membership. To make sure that Finland could claim to have liberated herself from the Nazis, the government ordered Lt. Gen. Hjalmar Siilasvuo to drive out the last German outposts. As Soviet troops fought their way into the heart of Berlin, far to the north Finnish soldiers removed the last German outpost from Finland. |
Conclusion |
---|
This battle was waged mostly by young conscripts who had been drafted after the armistice with the Soviet Union and had not seen combat; it is still the "Children's Crusade" in Finnish histories of the war. The Germans put up surprising resistance, but the Finns broke through their fortified line and drove them back into Norway. Finland became a founding member of the United Nations and the only former member of the Axis to end the war with no foreign troops on her soil. The Finns stacked their arms and embarked on six decades of peaceful coexistence with their neighbors. |

The standard mix of strongpoints may be downloaded from Avalanche Press: http://www.avalanchepress.com/German_Strongpoints.php This is the standard mix found in Airborne, Airborne-IE, and Edelweiss Expanded. The strongpoint mix in Cassino '44 is different from that of other PG games. (plloyd1010

Strongpoints are affected by the terrain in their hex just like any other unit.
Even though they can't move, they can attack using Assault Combat if an enemy unit moves into their hex.
They may not dig in or benefit from entrenchments.

Piecemeal Defense Won't Work |
---|
Germans set up two platoons entrenched on each of two southern hills with remainder of forces spread out in city and entrenched on northern hill. Finns approached from southeast and attacked closest entrenched units and quickly assaulted and overran them. 60% of Finnish forces headed north while remainder turned west to attack two other platoons on hill in woods. Finns assaulted units on northeast hill and took entrenchment and then moved into the southernmost town hex. Meanwhile, Finns struggled with Germans on southwest hill. In the end the higher Finnish morale and greater quantity of units proved too much for the spread out German mountain troops. At game's end only one town hex was still being contested and the Finns won 45-9. The scenario was fun and would probably be a lot closer if the Germans concentrate their defenses more. |
