Introduction |

Germany mobilized about 4 million men in August 1914, but only about half of these were in formal regular and reserve formations. The rest served in hastily formed Landwehr, Landsturm and Ersatz "brigades" - with no peacetime organization, no heavy weapons, and their men years removed from their military training (if they'd had any at all). Nevertheless, when reports came of Russian cavalry crossing into East Prussia, a collection of middle-aged cavalrymen and cyclists moved to stop them. |

Detached from the Königsberg general reserve, the 9th Landwehr Brigade had no contact with the nearby I Corps or Eighth Army, and had no business wandering around the battlefield without artillery support. Huseyn Khan Nakhchivansky's cavalry division simply obliterated the small force, which fought to the last man. |

This is an interesting and quick play scenario, and a good one to learn or practice cavalry tactics. Both sides enter the map in what is essentially a meeting engagement. The Russians have a pure cavalry force supported by a 7.62mm Field Gun. The Germans have a bicycle mounted Landwehr force supported by two cavalry battalions and have to prevent the Russians from advancing off the west edge while keeping their casualties down. Both sides marched onto the map, formed a line and dismounted and spent most of the game firing away at each other causing little casualties. As the end of the game neared some German units broke and ran and the Germans feel back to protect them and try to prevent the Russians from streaming off the board. In the last three turns, the Russians remounted and charged for the board edge. All but one unit made it and this proved the downfall of the Russians as they had to get 2 times as many points as the Germans. The Russians scored 16 and the Germans 9. If that one unit would have survived the opportunity fire, the Russians would have one. Nothing like a game that goes down to the last roll. |

Alas, Another Bummer of a Scenario | ||||||||||||||

We were inspired by Blackcloud's thoughtful & enthusiastic AAR to take a stab at playing this Infantry Attacks meeting engagement & exit scenario after having been severely disappointed with our previsious play-through a couple of years ago. Thought that we would see if we could "get a leg up" this time after a long hiatus in playing face-to-face. We hoped that a fresh look at the IA rules might help us to change our rather dim view of the rules for this WWI variant of PG. Alas, though it was an interesting and relatively quick play, that same disorganized mess of a rule book made this a frustrating & unpleasant slog. Luckily, the German leader draw was likewise awful, and there were 5 MANDATORY FOW-shortened turns that mercifully helped end this one quicker than others have noted. All the Germans leaders were eliminated, to only a single Russian leader lost. There was simply no stopping the rampaging Russian force from nearly-annihilating the hapless Landwehr formations. German casualties mounted each turn in part from lucky combat and morale recovery die rolling on the part of the Cossacks. As the PG fates would have it, this one went south for the Imperial Germans immediately and there was no sudden change in fortune during our playthrough. This scenario mirrored what happened that day painfully well for the victorious Russians. We gave this one a generous 2, and do not recommend it for shared pla. We look forward to a complete rulebook rewrite to untangle this unfortunate mess. In the meantime, avoiding the set of August 1914 scenarios, or creating your own set of DIY rules for this game is probably good advice. |
