The Commonwealth of the Philippines (1935–1946) was a U.S.-affiliated transitional government that faced a brutal Japanese invasion during WWII. Following the 1941 attack, combined Filipino-American forces were defeated in Bataan and Corregidor. While the government went into exile in the U.S., a widespread guerrilla movement fought the occupation until liberation in 1945, leading to independence on July 4, 1946. |
