The Independent State of Croatia was created in parts of Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia on 10 April 1941. Officially a monarchy, it was a fascist puppet state of Nazi Germany ruled by Ante Pavelić as Poglavnik (Head or Chief). The state included most of modern-day Croatia, all of Bosnia and Herzegovina, part of modern-day Serbia, and a small portion of modern-day Slovenia. The state again became part of Yugoslavia at the end of the war. The modern republic of Croatia does not recognize the Independent State of Croatia as its historical or legitimate predecessor, although it has rehabilitated the members of the Croatian Home Guard and allowed them pensions. |
