In October 1938, Nazi Germany occupied the Sudetenland border region, effectively rendering the border indefensible. In March 1939, the remainder of the country was dismembered. Slovakia became a separate nation under the Nazi thumb with other areas annexed by Poland and Hungary. The remainder became the German-controlled Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Reinhard Heydrich governed the area until his assassination in June 1942.

The Skoda works, a major arms manufacturer, continued in business after the fall. It provided weapons for Nazi Germany throughout the war.
