United States

Summary |
---|
The United States emerged as a world power with the Spanish-American War of 1898, prior to which it was concerned mostly with unifying the country and settling the vast territory between the east and west coasts. The country's main foreign policy goals were to prevent European interference in the Western Hemisphere and to stay out of European affairs. Circumstances, however, gradually drew the country from neutrality into association with the Allies in World War One. The United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917 and on Austria-Hungary on December 7, 1917. |
