The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has been one of the more stable countries of the Middle East. The basis of the kingdom was laid down with Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire in 1916. The kingdom was initially a British protectorate, becoming independent in 1946. Jordan had mostly tried to maintain tolerable, if not always friendly, relations with its neighbors. Economic stability and an outlook of tolerance has made Jordan a haven for displaced people. Jordan has avoided the Arab-Israeli Wars for the most part, but an unusually hostile monarch led to their involvement in Six Day War of 1967. |
