Nearly every army was segregated in some way in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In the U.S. army it was an institutional policy along racial lines. The policy was not only the result of slavery's legacy, but also of the regular army versus volunteer structure. As a result, nearly all "colored" (non-white) formations are regular army. The Buffalo Soldiers are the cavalry version of the colored units. |
