Although Romania had not yet officially declared war, a small cavalry force from the 2nd Calarasi Regiment moved into Soviet territory on June 22, 1941. They conducted a pincer movement with cavalry and HMG units northwest and southwest of town of Fontana Alba in northern Bucovina, while a mortar platoon provided overwatch on the hill northwest of town. By 0715 they were attacking the Soviet troops from the 164th Rifle Division garrisoned in the town, but the Soviets put up a firm defense and repelled repeated attacks. The Romanians finally secured Fontana Alba at 1000 hours, but a large Soviet force responded and advanced from the east. Both sides continued to battle, with the Romanians giving up significant ground, until 1315 hours. At that point both sides needed to halt the skirmish to recover their troops and replenish their supplies. This 2-map scenario has primary objectives that involve Romanian step los and control of town hexes. The Romanian setup involved sending combined cavalry/HMG (on wagon) units to move across the stream NW of town and through the SW woods. The mortar remained on the hill, but was unsuccessful at dropping smoke, so was limbered and moved to the NW wood hex on Turn 11. The Soviets were primarily in town, but three separate infantry units were dug in covering the main bridge and in the SW woods. They moved toward town after slowing the Romanian advance. The one-column shift for fire on cavalry makes the Soviet units somewhat more successful in this latter regard, particularly when used with op fire bonus. On the other hand, cavalry assault proved beneficial in the Romanian response. The Soviets were down to three INF units remaining on the board, one disrupted and two demoralized; however, on Turn 18, the reinforcement roll worked for the Soviets. At that point, the Soviets had lost 19 steps to 6 for the Romanians, so the only option for the latter to win was to hold the town. The Romanians were unable to hold all the town hexes; at game end (30 turns), they still had units in assault in two of the four town hexes. There was one other group of three Romanian platoons north of town as well, so the skirmish ended in a draw since the Romanians did not hold the town but still had units on Map #7. At game end, the Soviets had lost 32 steps (including one step lost from a lost leader), while the Romanians lost 16 (including two steps lost from leaders). The scenario played very well in reflecting the historical sense of the battle, as the Romanians were able to move forward quickly, but the Soviet force responded in strength once the reinforcements arrived. |
