Korean War: Counter-Attack, scenario #38: Desperation Around Changnyong

This one is a straight Infantry fight in the night with the Americans defending with a smaller force but dug-in on the higher ground but the North Korean have a much better artillery support for their night offensive and can enter the map from the north or west edge of the map, so the Americans have to defend from either direction, not knowing where the NKPA might enter. Also interesting to remember, that in night combat there is a -1 modifier in most combat situations. To win, the North Koreans have to eliminate three or more American steps without losing more than five of their own and those American HMG units shouldn’t be taken lightly. Setup for the US Army will be key in this scenario, as will be the NKPA approach.

The first five turns, the North Koreans move in for their assault after a few turns of back and forth fire they hit a stack of forward American Infantry with a very heavy concentration of artillery fire, and then adjacent direct fire, causing one Lieutenant to desert and a two-step Infantry to be lost, reducing both steps and demoralizing them at the same time. This was followed up by the game changer or the big assault of one NKPA leader with a +1 modifier, two SMG units and one INF unit stacked together and assaulting to finish off the two American reduced and demoralized steps, and the turning factor in the scenario, as now the North Koreans had killed four steps and needed only three to win without losing more than five, which they had only lost one step themselves. The North Koreans pull back after this combat to preserve their victory and not risk losing more steps. The American are too disorganized and not strong enough to turn the situation in their favor, as the North Korean artillery support is too strong to risk leaving the dug-out position to reengage NKPA units in the night.

Nice 15 turn scenario that can have different outcomes, depending on the setup, the attack configuration and the dice rolls but these smaller night scenarios are a blast to play, no pun intended!
