Saipan, scenario 24: Hell’s Pocket | ||||||||||||

Again, defensive setup and offensive approach is very important in this scenario but what I like about it, is the variable setup with caves, different possible defensive & offensive setups give this scenario a great replay value. In my game I decided not to repeat history as the Japanese had setup and had control of both large hills on the two maps forming kind of a Death Valley or Hell’s Pocket in between if you tried to attack it directly and the two American battle-groups of the 1st & 2nd Battalions, 106th Regiment, 27th Division would have bunched up in the middle for the slaughter just like in real life. So I flank one Battalion left and the other Battalion right. For a long period it was like two separate battles going on. The Japanese had one leader forward as a spotter for on board artillery and mortars but he was the first counter overrun and lost in combat as well! To my surprise the US Army was able to control 3 caves and inflict more casualties then they received. The 2 x 18 off board artillery units seemed to help at the right times and I was able to setup nice combinations of direct fire and assaults with engineers in good order for a change. This was an American Major victory and a good scenario to play. I played it off and on over 4-5 days. |
