The German cavalry gets an early start and charges against the Russians holding the town. 8 Russian platoons occupy the town, but by the time dawn begins to break at 5:15 only 2 and a half platoons remain. At 7:00am with the town almost completely cleared, 3 cavalry platoons race into the east to charge the Russian mortar crews therein. Within minutes, the crews are eliminated or routed. There is one problem left for the German horsemen, which is some Russian infantry dug-in on the road heading east in the middle of the forest. At 8:00 the final charge against the Russian infantry begins to mixed effect. The cavalry are cut down in the morning light, but the German batteries suppress the Russians. By 9:00 the road is cleared as the Russian forces flee into the woods. A mad dash is made by the German forces to get to their objective in the far east in time, but 3 cavalry platoons get distracted chasing down a disrupted Russian infantry squad. The infantry is eliminated before it can regain position on the road, but the grandfather clock strikes 10. The Russian forces were almost totally eliminated and only 3 German cavalry steps were lost. But, insufficient time meant that the Russians “stalled enough to obtain a draw”. Another 15 minutes would have seen enough Germans exit the map for a German victory. |
