Played against Vince FtF, Soviet force surge across a frozen river under a constant hail of artillery fire to strom a line of barbed wire protected and entrenched Italians. My pre-plotted artillery hit an empty hill and my commander got blown up in the first few turns, however the Red Army stuck to the orginal plan which was a flanking march to attck the rear of the Axis lines while the penal units pinned the forces in a frontal assault. Halfway through the attack the Italians counter attacked down the hill on to the flanking units. They were bravely beaton off and the Soviets swarmed after them overwhelming the entenchments and grabbing a victory from the jaws of defeat.
This was a strange scenario, at first seeming a very hard task for the Soviets, even though I think that a flanking attack is the correct move, the Red Army will suffer losses and will be unable to inflict any on the enemy for a lot of the early stage of the game.Once the assaults start though providing the Russian commander can keep feedin troops into the mellee then overwhelming numbers can tip the balance as they did in our game.
