The Abyss approaches, Boys - Hold In Place! | ||||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
This was a "short game - 15 game turns - which ended up taking us 6 sessions to get through starting last August! I led the defending GIs, and Miguelibal aggressively led the "bad new bears" of the Battle of the Bulge in his usual bold and risk-taking manner that very nearly brought off a victory, but for a devastating senior leader loss and the mass chaos that followed this during the 13th game turn. Other, better authors have covered this one in great detail, so a quick summary here. The GIs must hold Stavelot on Map 12 against a mixed force of German paras & SS in the woods and hills. Heavy urban fighting followed with many casualties for both sides. We alternated in session luck and the fickle fates regularly took a hand, especially in close assaults and adjacent-hex firefights. As others have indicated, US morale recovery die rolls were more often successful than their opponent's. Fierce seesaw fighting led to the loss of 31 German steps and 4 leaders, versus 12 for the Americans and only a single leader lost. The Jerries controlled 3 town hexes by the end, and the GIs held the rest, The bridge changed hands 3 times. A costly & hard-fought, US victory ensued. We recommend this one for both SHARED and SOLO play. |
