March on Leningrad #7 - Mga Station: The Marshal Taketh Away |
---|
A German river assault where the primary objectives are to capture the two towns on maps 3 and 4, capture the two bridges and the usual VPs for steps, both sides get VPs for these objectives. The Germans crossed the river near the border between maps 3 & 20 to out flank the two primary objectives and to get into the rear of the Soviet lines. The Soviets tried to disrupt the crossing with artillery fire and air support (while it lasted) but the river crossing numbers are high and the Germans have two engineer companies, so disruption was minimal (dice rolls). A counterattack from two Soviet rifle companies supported by a company of light tanks tried to push the Germans back but the attack was broken up by German artillery fire, long range support from a flak battalion and a company of Stugs. Once across the river in force the Germans took out the Soviet artillery batteries that did not displace fast enough, but they did KO a platoon of Stugs. Another Soviet counterattack by cavalry and armor was defeated as the Germans worked to clear both towns. |
