March on Leningrad #5 - Sol'tsy: Red Heat | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
The German blocking force holding the river crossing did not do much blocking and was overrun rather quickly with only a platoon of PzIVs making it back to the town of Sol’tsy, the Soviets pounded this force with heavy OBA fire, and this hastened the German breakout effort to the west. The encircled Germans headed southwest to try to breakout, there they ran into dug-in Soviet infantry supported by ATGs and light tanks. The German armor eventually got the upper hand, more do to armor efficiency, but the Soviets got their licks in on the German panzers. Soviet artillery & mortar fire helped reduce, disrupt and demoralize the retreating German infantry and support units. The German reinforcements were late arriving, especially the larger 3rd SS, which played a minimal role in the battle, could not roll a six. |
