When the lights go down in Tunisia the Frenchies come out to play | ||||||||||||||

That I won a game against Treadasaurus, is unusual. To have won this game, I think I want one of those grand reserve champion ribbons. He had a tiger!!! I had half tracks... With World War I vintage French 75s. Which turned out not to get in the fight anyway. But they were great decoys, moving around the whole board, trying to get him to commit his armor to chase them which he did. It wasn't Alexander the great at Gaugemla but it was pretty well played indeed. The best part about it all is that there's a forest in the middle of the board with heavy woods and light woods, and I set up thinking that he was coming from the bottom of the map so I set up a very cunning set of ambushes, defense in depth, and a last ditch set of entrenchment at the crossroads he had to capture. So you know, since I planned it, just the opposite happened and I had to re-orient my entire defense to him coming from the other direction on the map. I do not think this was terribly bright on my part, but it did work out OK so my last ditch set of entrenchment were a fairly tough nut that he did not attack directly so he went for the bulk of my infantry which was in the forest and that went slow. I had two French 75 and a bunch of miscellaneous infantry British anti-tank guns really just a hodgepodge but it's sort of worked out OK As he moved towards the crossroads initially I knocked out half track and his tank slowed down where upon I started moving my Stewart's to engage and he lit them up like a Fourth of July party. So now I'm down to just my half tracks with the AT guns and so I started playing hide and seek with him. I never actually found him, but he never actually found me either so keeping his tanks for the most part occupied. My infantry was able to hold its ground and then slowly move to threaten the crossroads at the bottom of the map where I thought he might be vulnerable, but the game ended before I could move enough forces to really get close and he fortified that little nut on the bottom. The game ended in pitch black darkness with him, not taking the crossroads that I had originally staked out with my anti-tank guns. I am not had as much fun in Panzer Grenadier in a long time. Working at night, trying to outsmart my opponent, who is much smarter than I am, turned into a real fun game. There were some issues with the game, the scenario. I think there was some errata, but overall it was a lot of fun and I can't thank my opponent Treadasaurus enough. |
