I will admit that the Russan defense was a bit tough to set up. (In fact I started the game three times before I hit upon a defense that would fit the bill.) I finally settled on a defense that set up around the town at a maximum of three hexes away from the nearest town hex. This gave the Russians a somewhat strong line to begin with and a retreat line for the final battle for the town. The first line held until the middle of the game and finally collapsed in the South East. The Germans didn't have enough forces left to finalize the battle for the town and could not move the Russians out of the hexes necessary to garner enough points to win. On the German's side, I set up the Mortars in the Northern woods and protected them with a couple of Infantry Plts. The rest of the German units came in on the South. (I toyed with the idea of splitting the attack force, but decided against it.)
