Unanticipated Russian Win at the Last Moment | ||||||||||||||

This was a 4-session, online play-through, on a combined 4 maps with the undaunted & clever Miguelibal leading elements of the German 16th Motorized Division. His missions to holding off the desperately charging elements of the Soviet 169th Rifle and 47th Tank Divisions. Both sides drew middling leaders. We played using the extended assault, smoke, strategic movement and ignored the FOW optional rule. The very difficult to manage, victory conditions, required that the Soviets liberate all town hexes on two map boards, PLUS there had be at least 1 Soviet unit within 5 hexes of the east edge. A truly tall order, as there are 22-town hexes on Map 2, alone, and the Soviet OBA could only be used on Maps 2 & 8. As it turned out, in an extremely costly battle, the Soviets were able to liberate all town hexes on the required 2 maps by dint of fierce fighting and quite of bit of die rolling luck. This result finally happened during the penultimate game turn for a very close, Soviet victory. Were it not for the 8 step lost required for the Soviets to lose an initiative level, this battle would have been a near-certain victory in the snow for the Axis player. All movement of both sides was in slow motion due to snow and the visisibility was only 9 hexes (1800 meters). I give this unbalanced, and probably untested, scenario a rating of 3, and think that is more suitable for SOLO play. |
