A Lucky Near Draw for the Soviets | ||||||||||||||

This was a 4-session play through with the fearless & hard-punching, CavDO, leading the attacking Germans. I had the outnumbered Soviet defenders in this low-maneuver, slugfest. The victory conditions were all about inflicting casualties and there are no tanks or other AFVs in the order of battle for either side. By the end, the casualties were high, but not enough for the Germans to win what looked - at first glance - like a walkover. We used the FOW and excess initiative optional rules. The final step losses were: 17 for the Soviets, and 16 for the Germans, resulting in a very close, Russian victory. German leader losses were heavy with 3 Lieutenants, a Sergeant, a Captain and their senior leader eliminated. The Soviets only lost a single Lieutenant. By the end of game turn 9, the Germans did take a pair of entrenchments in bloody close assaults, but could not clear the critical third one before time expired. Helping the Russians there were 5, FOW-shortened game turns This one is recommended for SOLO and SHARED play, with the MAJOR caveat, that the Soviet side is a much harder pull in this unbalanced scenario. However, the German side is ill-equipped for the task at hand with 4, near-useless anti-tank guns, when they should have had extra 81mm mortars for this infantry-only scenario. |
