Nighttime SS Disaster | ||||||||||||||

This was a 4-session play through with the fast-improving, CavDo, leading the Germans. I played the defending American side. We used the FOW, excess initiative, smoke/illum and extended assault optional rules. It turned out to be arelatively short, mostly nighttime, shoot 'em up that was made much shorter thanks to 12 FOW-shortened turns that significantly aided the American defenders. the Americans established defensive positions in the vicinity of the hill, immediately adjacent to the crossroads (Hex 0709). The Germans entered from the south. The US paratroopers entered from the west edge Map 25. The German SS troops pushed north along the road, and the US paras deployed as skirmishers in the woods along the western margins of this high-speed avenue of approach. Once open the map, the SS began engaging the Airborne troops in the light woods on the western side of the road. A strong counter thrust by the US infantry took on the northern contingent of the German probe, and was able to blunt, and then roll back this prong with determined close assaults. The vital crossroads was secured by the Americans during game turn 13, and the game was virtually over at that point, thanks to the 8 steps that the Germans had already lost. Not a very balanced scenario. I gave this one a 4, mostly because it was fun to play as the defending American Commander. This one is better-suited to solo play. |
