So close and yet way too far... | ||||||||||||

Was close but was actually a German minor victory. First I treated town hexes being assaulted as belonging to the Soviets because they were the first ones there. I changed from a Soviet major to a German minor because I decided that assaulted hexes don't belong to anyone vs the last side to fully control the hex. Germans had a minor victory - controlled 3 hexes of Gremuchii town outright, Soviets controlled one, three hexes were being assaulted (Soviets barely clinging onto two) and I treated them being under no one's control. I believe I am reading the rule book correctly re: the "ownership" of assault hexes. The soviets put all of the mines and the entrenchments, backed up with a fairly thin line. Mortar units were in the Northwest right before the field and woods. A strong AT gun, infantry unit and a lieutenant were posed in the southwest corner fields, trying to get a lucky Tiger shot. Gremuchii was packed with the remaining units. The Germans put about 2/3 of the units in a flanking maneuver to the west. The remaining 1/3 units (infantry and engineers) slowly advanced directly south of the town, working their way through the minefield. Soviets got first blood when the AT gun took out a loaded APC. AT gun position resisted stubbornly but was eventually liquidated. Two Soviet Grant units came in right on turn five, took out a step on the StugIIIG unit but were wiped out they the Stug and the Tiger. Germans slowly worked their way into the town, assault hex after assault hex. Very good, one map scenario with interesting units (Soviet flamethrower, Grants, Tiger, AT and artillery). |
