A splendid scenario for learning Panzer Grenadier. German attackers moved into position at 1830 and began firing from multiple hexes using flares and HMGs. At first the Americans reeled back after taking heavy casualties. But then as the night air thickened and the Texans of the 141st realized no help was coming and their backs were against the Rapido, their resolve stiffened with some decent die rolls from ma mortar unit and off board artillery rounds that paid off with few friendly fire casualties. Of crucial importance was digging in early during the first few turns but at a cost of being able to conduct opportunity fire. The Germans made the mistake of calling in their own off board artillery on several occasions, resulting in heavy casualties in hexes that were adjacent to the target hexes. Their attacks bogged down in a series of assaults. A 150 IG was ineffective and eventually became demoralized due to direct fire from hex 2728 at the bend in the Rapido. Slowly but surely, with their higher morale rating and presence of effective leaders, the Gerries pushed the Americans back to hexes 2728 and 2828. The game ended at 0245 hours, with the 141st racking up 10 VPs and the Germans carrying the night with 20 VPs. |
