#14 The Crossing |
---|
Elements of a Polish Rifle Battalion were charged with defending a burned out bridge and a small town from a German advance from both the east and north. The German attacking force from the east was made up of a battalion of engineers who quickly got across the river in force with support from their 81mm mortars, OBA and a train, they cleared the approach’s to the town only to come under heavy fire from the Polish HMGs and a battery of French 75’s. To the North the SS had luck on their side as they advanced on the Polish left flank, a Polish 40mm AAA opened fire which demoralized all but a couple of platoons but it was knocked out by the timely arrival of a flight of Ju88s which glide bombed it into submission. Two platoons of SS supported by a MG platoon moved thru the woods to flank the town which helped the engineers clear all but one town hex for a German Major victory. |
