This scenario has a German infantry advance against a Polish cavalry force defending a wide front but the Polish forces have several advantages, a more mobile force, 4 batteries of French 75’s, 2 Tankette platoons and high morale, while the Germans have numbers and drew some excellent leaders, which kept them in the game. The Germans concentrated their forces to the southern road which come under intense Polish artillery fire once they got into range that disrupted and demoralized about a third of the attacking force, but the German leaders were able to rally their troops and kept them advancing if only slowly. The Polish Tankettes early on were able to eliminate the lone German 37mm ATG battery but got too close to the German infantry guns in the process, who by sheer luck knocked out two steps and sent the Tankettes scurrying away, the infantry guns only contribution to the battle, it was a miracle they even survived the battle. Polish forces on this front put up a good fight but were eventually overwhelmed while the Germans attempted to clear the road. At this point it looked like the Germans were going to carry the day but two Polish cavalry squadron’s defending the other road & town, who were unengaged, decided to reinforce their comrades. As they began to move out the Germans saw an opportunity to commit their reserve battalion to clear the north road and capture the town, seeing this new threat the Polish cavalry reversed direction to attack the German infantry out in the open. Polish artillery fire shifted to this new threat while the cavalry charged and assaulted the German infantry, with the Germans taking heavy casualties, but a lone German company rallied with the help of a 10-2-2 Colonel, beat back the Polish forces who did not have the strength to continue the attack. Excellent German leadership carried the day as they overcame low morale, Polish artillery and the decapitation of their commanding officer, gaining two of the three VC for a surprising minor victory. |
