Kursk the way you've heard | ||||||||||||

I got a recommendation for this scenario as very representative of the Kursk battle you've heard and read about. It does not disappoint, with an abundance of tanks, guns, and infantry. Since it's the very start of the offensive the tanks in this one are much more in number for the Germans. I had Leibstandarte advance carefully on the first defense line, softening it up with OBA, aircraft, mortars, and armor HE fire. I did not delay for long though because the German timetable seems aggressive. The Germans at first seemed to be doing fine, and I thought they would capture Bykovka, their first objective, ahead of schedule. It turned out dismantling the first defense line required more effort than I'd estimated. The Germans eventually took Bykovka at about 4 pm, right around the historical record. While the Guards suffered a lot of casualties it cost the Germans a lot, too (13 steps). By then many SS platoons were already advancing on the second defense line. I was no longer optimistic about German success, but I needed to keep going to be sure how it played out. Exiting 25 steps looked well nigh impossible, but capturing the second defense line hills and keeping casualties in check was still possible. Eventually though I called it a Soviet victory when there were about five turns left. The Germans were encroaching on the hills but the big hill in particular, where I'd sequestered a few Guards platoons in the rear, looked certain to require too much time. It's an enjoyable scenario, but generally bigger than my preference. I'm redirectimg my solo efforts to East Front Deluxe. I think all of EFD's scenarios are smaller than Attack of the Lifeguards. |
