Scenario PaGr030

I picked this one to play because it looked quick and it was in the Battles for the Day list of the day I was reading the list. And, I have not played one from the original game in the long time. This is a straight forward assault on a town scenario with a Soviet Rifle Battalion, supported by tanks attacking across the open ground of the Steppes to assault a town held by a German infantry company reinforced by tanks and supported by air. The Soviets know they will take their lumps and just go for it. They attack head on at the town with the tanks coming in from the west to engage the German Pz III platoon.

Although some Soviets are sent scurrying away from German indirect fire and small arms the Soviets manage to get to the town in relatively good order using the cover of smoke (I used the Fire in the Steppe special rule to see if they would get smoke). By mid-game the Commies had a foothold both on the north end of town and on the west flank. The KV-1s push back the panzers but not before a lucky shot kills the KV-2; this loss is sorely felt as that firepower is needed for the continued assault. The Germans counter and retake the west hex. It goes down tot he wire with the Soviets one German step loss away from victory while the Germans could still through the Commies out of the town for the win. Neither side can accomplish either task. This goes down to the wire where either could win but don't. An exciting play for this old scenario.
