Scenario DBDe001

This scenario is simple: The SS need to capture the two hex town, Graignes. The US 82nd Airborne Division set up in the town, following instructions that state that the paratroopers may set up within two hexes of the town. The German 17th SS Panzergrenadier Divsion easily surrounded the town on three sides, after setting up to the east of the Americans. Strengths of the two sides are disportioncate. The 82nd troops only have two full strength platoons, four reduced platoons, a mortar and two HMG’s. The Germans have nine full strength SS grenadiers (7-3 strength), three mortars, two HMG and an engineer. But the Americans possess a significant advantage. They have vastly superior morale at 8-8. The SS are rated at 7-6. But the ensuing battle for the town proved the Germans worthy opponents. The low morale and bad leadership of the SS did not hinder their attack on the town.

The German mortars opened up with a 24 point barrage on the 82nd. But to no effect; and the mortars continued to miss their targets throughout the game. The SS troops attacked US positions in assaults and quickly pinned the paratroopers in the town. These assaults were bloody. By turn five, the Germans had eliminated nine paratrooper steps; the US eliminated five German steps. In one assault, snakeyes were rolled by both sides in the initial roll on the Assault Table! (They were not rolled back-to-back.) This resulted in both sides losing 2 stelps. And as the battle continued for the town, the 82nd shifted the VP total in their favor though they lost both hexes of the town at one point.

On the last turn (15), the paratroopers only had one full platoon remaining. All other units were eliminated. With this one platoon, they assaulted a German stack of grenadiers in the town. Thus, the hex became contested. No longer controlled by the Ss, the Germans lost two points. The final VP tally : 17th SS - 13; 82nd Airborne- 13 ! A true draw!
